Reading Strategies

      Everyone can improve their reading skills. Here are some tips to help you understand what you've read, they'll really come in handy as you study for your classes.

       Before you read, survey the text and review the following:

• the title
• headings and subheadings
• introductory sentences in paragraphs
• captions under pictures
• maps, graphs and charts
• bold or italicized words

  Know your purpose for reading

   Are you reading to study, to look for information or for pleasure?

   While you're reading:

•    Use chunks and parts of words to decode unfamiliar words.
•       Use context clues to figure out new words.
•     Make connections- What does this remind you of?
•     Predict what might happen next.
